It helps a lot on sharpness, both for screen and print, but on print, if done right, it's a world of difference, the old ones looks like they have something blurry on covering them when comparing

Yes For portraits I use Unsharp Mask (USM), for other stuff I use High Pass sharpening. I just like the look of these for those things. There is no real right or wrong, just what you like and don't and/or what works and what doesn't.
